The overflow process by Nippon Electric Glass is a premier technique for shaping molten glass into flat glass. In this method, molten glass fills a trough-shaped refractory block and overflows from both sides. The two streams flow down the block’s surfaces and merge at the bottom tip, creating a single, V-shaped flow.
To maintain a consistent width, the glass is drawn downward by its edges and cooled while flat, solidifying into a glass ribbon. A key advantage of this process is that the glass surface touches nothing but air, resulting in a pristine, ultra-smooth finish that requires no additional polishing.
Optimized for producing thin sheets (2 mm or less), this method is essential for manufacturing high-tech components such as LCD/OLED substrates, DinorexUTG® cover glass for smartphones, and Sonarion™ speaker diaphragms.
